Day Two at the XIV AIBA World Championships
57kg Featherweight Stephen Smith (ENG) lost to Marcel Herfurth (GER) 14:20
After a 3-0 fast start from the Liverpool (Rotunda ABC) man, Stephen finished every round trailing the German (4:5, 7:11, 11:16, 14:20). The contest was perhaps closer than the score, but the German ran out the deserved winner.
Comment from Terry Edwards "Swifty Smith was not as fast as he has been in sparring and was getting caught by the German's right cross. However, Stephen will pick up from here, he knows what he has to do to qualify. "
Stephen Smith "No excuses, I just wasn't as quick as normal".
75kg Middleweight Tobias Webb (WAL) lost to Konstantin Buga (GER) RSCO3 5:25
Promising young Welsh middleweight showed inexperience at the top level when he was outmanoeuvred by a good German boxer.
Quote from Colin Jones (Assistant Welsh Coach and former World Welterweight title contender) "He's only 18. The occasion definitely got to him. He needed exposure at this level to experience the pressure of a world class tournament. He will learn." (R1 1:6, R2 2:11, R3 5:25)
75kg Middleweight James DeGale (ENG) lost to Alfonso Blanco (VEN) 13:28
A poor performance against a good rangy Venezuelan. James walked straight forward and didn't seem to be able to get out of the way of Blanco's right hand. Having created an early 3-0 lead and winning the first round 5-4 Chunky did not box with the fluid style that has seen him consistently medal this year. 7-9 down at the end of the second, 11-16 down at the end of the third, losing both rounds to the Venezuelan's right hand. DeGale chased the fight in the last round and got picked off to lose 13-28.
Quote from a despondent James DeGale "Terrible performance. I can't understand why I kept getting caught by his right hand. Can't believe my performance."
Terry Edwards GB Head Coach "Not the performance we expected from DeGale. The kid he boxed is a good fighter. Chunky wasn't Chunky this afternoon. The performance was not reflective of his international achievements over the last 11 months. "
91kg Heavyweight Danny Price (ENG) lost to Clemente Russo (ITA) 5:14
A spirited performance from Danny Price (West Way ABC, Scarborough) against a renowned, experienced, world-class spoiler saw Danny edged out of a close tit-for-tat encounter. The unusual angles, fast hands and vast experience proved decisive on the night (R1 1:2, R2 3:6, R3 4:10).
Danny Price said "He is awkward and was always going to make me look bad. I should have been good enough to have beaten him. I am disappointed."
Terry Edwards said "A solid performance from Danny against a cagey opponent. Danny has the ability to qualify for the Olympics if strings together consistent performances."
+91kg Super Heavyweight David Price (ENG) beat Marko Tomasovic (CRO) 23:11
A controlled performance saw David Price (Salisbury ABC, Liverpool) comfortably out box the Croatian. Price won all four rounds working at a good pace with long hard, straight combinations against a shorter opponent who was looking to press the action. In the main Price kept the Croatian on the back foot and rarely allowed his opponent the opportunity of coming forward. (R1 4:1, R2 9:2, R3 16:6).
Quotes from David Price "I felt a bit rusty. It was good to get the full four rounds in. I needed four rounds of competition. I was pleased to get the team back on track with a win"
Terry Edwards said "Great stuff. A good four rounds at a good pace. David needed four rounds to set him up for the rest of this competition. He boxed well within himself and was hurting the guy with single shots."
