In 1930 the 'ABA discontinued the rule of an extra (4th) round if the scores were level.   Fred Mallin 75kg (Eton Manor ABC), Tommy Harry Mizler 54kg (Oxford and St. Georges ABC) and Anthony Stuart 91kg (Army) becomes Commonwealth Champion in 1930 (Hamilton, Canada).   Tommy Pardoe 51kg (Metropolitan ABC) collects a Silver medal, with Fred Brooman 69kg (Northampton Institute ABC) a Bronze medal.   Jim O'Driscoll 91kg (Irish ABA) had been (6) times Irish Champion.

47th ABA National Championships

 

1930 - 1931

Venue:                    Royal Albert Hall, London

 

Dave McCleave 60kg (Lynn ABC) will go onto become European Champion in 1934 (Budapest, Hungary) and Commonwealth Champion in 1934 (London, England).   He was quoted as "..his unscrupulously fair boxing and his exemplary conduct both in and out of the ring.   McCleave has earned the esteem of every follower of the game".   He also represented Great Britain in the 1932 Olympic Games (Los Angeles, USA).   He is credited with being the first schoolboy boxer of Lynn ABC.   The oldest amateur boxing club in England established in 1892.   Jack Peterson 81kg (Gabalfa BC) wins the Welsh ABA titles at 81kg and 91kg and English ABA title at 81kg, all in 1931.

Anthony Stuart 91kg (London Fire Brigade ABC) and Pat (H) Floyd contested (4) National ABA Finals against each other.   Stuart winning (2) in 1930, 1932 and Floyd (2) in 1929, 1934.   Joe Goyder 81kg (City Police and Goldsmiths ABC) had won Commonwealth Gold in 1930 (Hamilton, Canada) whilst the losing finalist, George Brennan (2nd Tank Regiment) was to win the Commonwealth Gold in 1934 (London, England).

Harry Mizler wins his (3) and last National ABA title (1930, 1932, 1933) at the age of (20).   After also winning Commonwealth Gold (1930, Hamilton, Canada).   He became an Olympian at the 1932 Games (Los Angeles, USA).

 

Alf Shawyer 75kg (Old Goldsmiths ABC) produced a shock in beating Fred Mallin (Eton Manor ABC) who had won the title for the previous (5) years.   Shawyer went onto become Commonwealth Champion in 1934 (London, England).

Dave McCleave 69kg (Lynn ABC) wins the last of his (3) National ABA titles (1931, 1932, 1934).    Pat Palmer 51kg (Battersea and Shexgar ABC), Dave McCleave 69kg (Lynn ABC), George Brennan 81kg (Nottingham City Police ABC) and Pat (H) Floyd 91kg (Battersea and The Times ABC) all became Commonwealth Champions in 1934 (London, England).   Palmer (51kg), McCleave (69kg) and Floyd (91kg) all add the 1934 European Gold (Budapest, Hungary).

Pat (H) Floyd 91kgh (Battersea and The Times ABC) wins his third of his (4) National ABA titles (1929, 1934, 1935, 1946).   He was a finalist on (2) other occasions (1932, 1938).   He also won Commonwealth Gold in 1934 (London, England) and a Bronze medal in the European Championships in 1934 (Budapest, Hungary).

 

Roger Michelot 81kg (France) went onto become Olympic Champion in 1936 (Berlin, Germany) for France.   One of (2) Europeans to win Olympic Gold that year.

Jackie Pottinger 54kg (Cardiff Gas BC) won the Bronze Medal for Wales at the 1934 Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games) in London (England).   Alf Russell 51kg becomes the first 'ABA National Champion' not attached to an ABA Affiliated Club.   He had previously been a Finalist Champion representing Rotherham Boys ABC in 1936.
