Golden Gloves (Schoolboys)
The 'Schoolboy Championships' first began in February 1920 against some resistance within the sport, even then it was only for 'secondary' school children. The Championship was split between 'Juniors' (4) weights and 'seniors' (5) weights. The second Championships were held in December of the same year. In 1922 the London Schools ABA was formed.
The Schools Amateur Boxing Association was formed in 1946 following a meeting held at the Regent Street Polytechnic College (London) on the 16 July 1946. It was formed by representatives of; Schools Associations, ABA and the ABA County Associations. The Championships continued under the guidance of the Schools ABA in 1947 with the finals held in Brighton of that year. The objectives of the Schools ABA were agreed as -
- advancement of boxing among schoolboys
- guidance upon methods of teaching and judging, and the conduct of competitions
- improvement and extension of facilities for boxing in schools
- arrangement of the annual championships.
In 2004 the Schoolboy Championships fell back to the ABAE and the Championships were relaunched as the 'Golden Gloves'. The age range was reduced with (15) year olds now moving to the Junior ABA Championships.
